to the official site of Lions Clubs District 410C, Republic of South
Africa. Founded in 1917 by Melvin Jones in the USA, Lions International
can proudly say it is the largest international service organisation in
the world. A family of members spanning from Australia to Brazil, from
India to Scandinavia - all united by a common motto - "We Serve".
Lions
throughout the world accomplish varying activities, from cornea
transplants to the supplying of hearing aids, creating awareness of
diabetes, promoting peace amongst the youth, fostering international
relations through youth exchange and developing and creating
awareness amongst the youth through "Leo" Clubs. LCIF, the
organisations' international grant-providing wing, brings in much
needed grants for training facilities, medical units and disaster
relief in times of need. During the floods in Mozambique, emergency
grants were given to aid the victims of this catastrophe. After
September 11, 2001, victims families were aided with counselling
camps, paid for by LCIF funding.
District 410C encompasses the provinces of Free State and Kwazulu-Natal, comprising a total of 35 clubs. These spread from Kimberley
to Kokstad to Ladysmith. The
District forms part of the greater 410 South Africa/Namibia fold. A
non-sexist, non-age and race discriminate organisation, the members
span from their early twenty's to their late eighty's. As long as
the heart wishes to serve, there is always place within the family
of Lionism!
One
of the fundraisers Lions are famous for, is the delicious Christmas
cakes that are supplied by Albany Bakeries. These help the clubs
raise much needed funds for service projects like: Operation
Brightsight, Lions Quest (Skills for Adolescents - including
HIV/AIDS education), Feeding schemes, Drug Awareness, and club level
assistance to the aged, poor children, and the physically and
mentally challenged.
Clubs
like Port Shepstone hold their own annual show - a highlight on the
KZN South Coast's July calendar. Others organise golfing days, and
Ballito on the North Coast holds a Box Car Derby - another
highlight, this time in April.
Big
things can be accomplished by working together as a unified whole,
so clubs often raid each other and develop friendships, and join
together to help when added hands are needed. Everyone is there for
the same reason - to help the less fortunate, and that is why large
projects and fundraisers can be tackled with success!
If
you are a service minded individual wishing to join and serve
together with other like-minded people, and establish friendships
that may last a lifetime, please feel free to contact your local
Lions Club. If you have a group of friends together that would like
to become part of a world-wide organisation, but there is currently
not a club in your area, a branch club can be formed, and if twenty
or more people are interested, a new club can be chartered.
Details
of each of the Clubs are listed in the
Directory link at the top of this page. If
you have any further enquiries, comments or suggestions, please contact
the Webmaster,
Lion Denis Meyer.
